How to Blur Background in Canva

Welcome to Ben’s Experience! In this tutorial, I will show you how to blur a background in Canva. This technique can help you create professional-looking designs by focusing attention on the main subject of your images.

Step 1: Create a New Design

Visit Canva.com and start by creating a new design. For this tutorial, we will use an Instagram post template to get a square format. Once your design space is ready, add the image you want to work with.

Step 2: Select and Detach the Background

To blur the background, you need to detach it from the main subject. Use a Photoshop online alternative called Photo.com. Open your image in Photo.com and start selecting the background. You can use the polygonal lasso select tool to outline the background, or switch to the magic wand or ellipse select tools for more precise selection. Hold down the shift key to add to your selection and the option key (or alt key on PC) to remove parts of the selection.

Step 3: Copy and Create a New Layer

Once the background is selected, copy it (command + C on Mac or control + C on PC). Paste it to create a new layer. This will allow you to edit the background separately from the main subject. Ensure the background layer is properly positioned before proceeding.

Step 4: Apply the Blur Effect in Canva

Return to Canva and add the newly edited background. Click on the background layer, go to the ‘Edit’ option on the toolbar, and select ‘Effects’. From the effects menu, choose ‘Blur’ and adjust the intensity to your liking. This will blur the background while keeping the main subject sharp and in focus.
