How to Blur Background in Canva

Welcome to Ben’s Experience! In today’s tutorial, I’ll be showing you how to blur a background in Canva, a fantastic tool for all your design needs.

Step 1: Create a New Design

First, go to Canva.com. Once there, create a new design. For this example, let’s choose an Instagram post to get a square template.

Step 2: Add Your Image

Next, add your image to the design. This is the image we’ll be working with to blur the background.

Step 3: Detach the Background

To blur the background, we need to separate it from the subject (your face or body). For this, we’ll use an online Photoshop alternative called Photo.com.

  1. Upload your image to Photo.com.
  2. Use the Polygonal Lasso tool to select the background. Zoom in for precise selection.
  3. Hold the Shift key to select multiple parts of the background.
  4. Switch to different selection tools if needed (e.g., Magic Wand, Rectangle).

Step 4: Copy and Create New Layers

Once the background is selected:

  1. Copy the selected part of the image (Command C on Mac or Ctrl C on PC).
  2. Paste it to create a new layer. Now you should have two layers: the original image and the background.

Step 5: Save and Upload to Canva

Save the new image with the selected background as a PNG file. Upload this image back to Canva.

Step 6: Apply the Blur Effect

Now, select the top photo (the background photo) in Canva. Click on “Edit” from the toolbar and go to “Effects.” Choose “Blur” and adjust the intensity to your liking.
