How to Overlay Pictures in Canva

Welcome to Ben’s Experience! In this blog post, I will guide you through the process of overlaying pictures in Canva, one of the most popular online graphic design tools. This technique is incredibly useful for creating eye-catching visuals, whether for social media posts, presentations, or personal projects.

Step 1: Create a New Design

To begin, head to Canva’s website at canva.com and create a new design. You can choose from various formats, but for this tutorial, let’s select a square template suitable for a YouTube thumbnail or an Instagram post.

Step 2: Add Your Background Image

Once you have your template, the next step is to add a background image. Simply click on the “Uploads” tab on the left-hand panel and select your desired image. This will serve as the base for your overlay.

Step 3: Remove Background from the Overlay Image

Now, let’s overlay another picture on top of the background. For this example, I’ll be using a photo of myself. To ensure that only my face appears, we’ll need to remove the background. For this, I recommend using a free online tool like Photo.com. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Open your image in Photo.com.
  2. Use the selection tool to highlight the area you want to keep, while holding the Shift key to select multiple sections.
  3. Once you’ve made your selections, click “Delete” to remove the unwanted background.

Step 4: Copy and Paste into Canva

After successfully removing the background, select all the remaining parts of your image (Ctrl + A on PC or Command + A on Mac). Then, copy the image and return to Canva.

In your Canva design, delete the previous image layer and paste (Ctrl + V or Command + V) your edited photo onto the background. You now have a beautifully overlaid picture!
